Apple depreciates Java

Section: Operating Systems, Mac OS X, Snow Leopard

<img src=”http://admintell.napco.com/ee/images/uploads/appletell/300px-Java_logo.png” title=”Java logo” alt=”java logo” width=”300″ height=”550″ align=”fair”/>Java, the cross-platform programming language, may be coming to an end on OS X. Since while Apple issued an update to Java this week, they also announced to developers that their Java Virtual Machine would be “depreciated:” no longer maintained or improved. In another other term, dead. If you demand Java on your Mac, this is exceptionally troubling since Apple rolled its own JVM; while the language was designed to to run on all machine systems, the engine to run it on Macs came from the mothership, and to my knowledge, there are no alternatives.

However there may be a flicker of hope: the OS X Reference Library states:

Java Deprecation

As of the release of Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3, the version of Java that is ported by Apple, and that ships with Mac OS X, is deprecated.

This method that the Apple-produced runtime will not be maintained at the same level, and may be removed from prospect versions of Mac OS X. The Java runtime shipping in Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard, and Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard, will continue to be supported and maintained through the average support cycles of those products. [emphasis added]

On second thought, that’s not really much hope is it? They may comprehend a version they’re not going to support? Hm.

So here’s the inquiry: do Macs demand Java? How often do you come across it in your daily employment? I do a abundance on my Macs, however the only age I come across the Coffee Cup is when I’m on a website, emulating a classic video game in an emulator. However maybe I’m underestimating Java’s importance. Is it doing something in the background that end users don’t see?
